The Houston Texans have adjusted their roster with a handful of moves, adding depth at wide receiver while making changes to their backfield.
New Additions at Wide Receiver
The Texans signed Cornell Powell, a 6-foot, 204-pound wide receiver and former Clemson Tiger. Powell was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He spent time on Kansas City’s practice squad from 2021 to 2024, before short stints with the Seattle Seahawks and the DC Defenders of the UFL. Powell brings experience across multiple levels of competition and will look to carve out a role in Houston’s receiving corps.
The team also added Juwann Winfree, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound wideout drafted in the sixth round in 2019 out of Colorado by the Denver Broncos. Winfree played three games as a rookie before going on injured reserve. He later joined the Green Bay Packers in 2020, where he spent multiple stretches elevated from the practice squad. After a brief stint with the Indianapolis Colts in 2023, Winfree was released in August 2024. Houston will give him another opportunity to prove himself.
Departures at Running Back
The Texans released J.J. Taylor, who originally entered the league as a 2020 undrafted signing with the New England Patriots out of Arizona. Taylor joined Houston’s practice squad in 2023 and appeared in five games last season. Though undersized at 5-foot-6, 185 pounds, Taylor flashed explosiveness during preseason action and provided depth behind the Texans’ starters.
Injury Note
The team also placed Xavier Johnson on the waived/injured list after he suffered a broken hand, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2. Johnson, a former Ohio State teammate of Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, joined Houston’s practice squad last season after initially signing with the Buffalo Bills as a 2024 undrafted free agent.
