There are moments at games like this that end up sticking with you more than anything that actually happens on the court.
Game 6 at the Toyota Center had that kind of feel, even if the result wasn’t what Houston Rockets fans were hoping for. It got away from them early and ended in pretty rough fashion, but that’s a different conversation for a different time. This one’s staying on the Texans angle.
Because Will Anderson Jr. and Kayden McDonald being there together ended up producing one of the more entertaining moments of the night.
At one point, LeBron James dove for a loose ball and slid out of bounds right into the courtside area where Anderson was sitting. He hit the floor basically at Anderson’s feet, and Anderson helped him up before the two exchanged a quick greeting in the middle of live action. It was the kind of random, blink-and-you-miss-it interaction that immediately takes off online.
What made it hit even more is the running joke that’s been circulating for a while now—that Anderson looks like Bronny James. Same facial structure, similar build, just enough resemblance that people have had fun with it.
So when LeBron got asked about the moment postgame by Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle, he didn’t just acknowledge it, he leaned all the way in.
He joked that Anderson was his “fourth child,” said he and Bronny were twins that nobody knew about, and then followed it up by making sure to show real respect—calling Anderson an unbelievable football player who deserves everything he’s earned. It was a fun moment by LeBron, mixing humor with awareness and giving a nod to a rising player in another sport.
Beyond the viral moment, though, it was just as notable seeing Anderson and McDonald there together. That pairing is going to matter for this team.
Anderson has already established himself as one of the tone-setters on the defense, someone offenses have to account for on every snap. McDonald comes in as a piece that can help stabilize the interior, and if he does his job the way the Texans envision, it changes the math up front. Interior disruption, occupying space, forcing protection decisions—those things directly impact what Anderson sees off the edge.
And McDonald seems to understand exactly what his role is.
When he was asked how he’s enjoying Houston, the answer wasn’t drawn out or overly polished. He kept it simple.
“I’m just here to plug up the middle, man.”
It wasn’t even really the question being asked, but it ended up being the perfect answer anyway. There’s a level of clarity and buy-in there that you want from a player stepping into that kind of role, especially in a defense that asks its front to play fast, physical, and selfless.
That’s the kind of mindset that fits what DeMeco Ryans wants this unit to be.
So while the Rockets’ night didn’t end the way the city hoped, there was still a moment tucked inside it that says something about where the Texans are headed. You’ve got one established piece and one new addition already building familiarity, even if it’s just sitting courtside and sharing a laugh during a chaotic sequence.
And somehow, it turned into LeBron James joking about a secret family connection in the process.
