They were bringing in a player with nearly a decade of experience, two First-Team All-Pro selections, three Pro Bowls, and someone who has experienced both rebuilding franchises and legitimate playoff contenders.

In an exclusive one-on-one interview with Houston Stressans, Teller opened up about what ultimately drew him to Houston, how CJ Stroud personally helped recruit him, why he believes the Texans have one of the NFL's strongest cultures, and why this is the most talented roster he's been around during his career.

CJ Stroud Helped Bring Him to Houston

One of the biggest takeaways from the interview came when Teller revealed that CJ Stroud played a direct role in recruiting him during free agency.

The two connected earlier this year at an NFL faith-based conference, where Stroud made it clear he wanted Teller wearing a Texans uniform. Teller laughed while recalling that Stroud wisely recruited his wife first, joking that the young quarterback even volunteered to help watch their children if they decided to move to Houston.

While contract discussions and football opportunities ultimately determined his decision, Teller admitted those conversations stood out because they demonstrated the type of leadership Stroud already possesses despite entering just his fourth NFL season.

It's one thing for an organization to pursue free agents. It's another when the franchise quarterback takes ownership of helping build the roster himself.

"One of the Smartest Guys on the Field"

Teller's praise for Stroud extended far beyond recruiting.

When asked what has impressed him most since arriving in Houston, he described Stroud as one of the smartest football players he's ever been around. According to Teller, Stroud processes protections, coverages, and offensive concepts at an incredibly high level, often recalling complex information without hesitation.

"He’s an encyclopedia," Teller said while describing his quarterback's football knowledge.

Teller also pointed to Stroud's faith, explaining that the same discipline he applies to football is evident during team Bible studies, where he's known for recalling scripture with remarkable accuracy. To Teller, it reflects the same preparation and commitment that makes Stroud such an effective leader on the field.

For Texans fans, it was another reminder that many of the qualities teammates praise most about Stroud are the ones rarely seen on Sundays.

The Texans' Culture Continues to Attract Veterans

Throughout the interview, Teller consistently returned to one topic: culture.

He credited DeMeco Ryans for establishing a locker room built around accountability, teamwork, and genuine relationships while also praising Nick Caserio and ownership for assembling players who fit that vision. Rather than describing a roster full of individuals chasing statistics, Teller repeatedly emphasized that everyone in the building understands the importance of putting the team first.

Although the Texans have become known for having several outspoken Christian leaders, Teller didn't frame faith as a requirement. Instead, he explained that Houston simply prioritizes players with strong character who understand there's something bigger than themselves.

That philosophy, in his opinion, creates the type of environment where talented players naturally buy into a shared goal instead of competing for individual attention.

It's the type of locker room every organization wants but very few successfully build.

Nick Caley's Offense Is Becoming More Comfortable

As someone who has played under several offensive coordinators throughout his career, Teller provided valuable perspective on Nick Caley's system entering its second season.

Rather than labeling Houston as a gap-running offense or a zone-running offense, Teller explained that Caley wants the offense to threaten defenses in multiple ways. Wide zone, inside zone, gap concepts, screens, play-action, and complementary passing concepts all work together so defenses can't predict what's coming next.

He also noted that communication has noticeably improved compared to where the offense started a year ago. Returning players already understand the terminology and expectations, allowing practices to move faster and the offense to operate with greater confidence before the snap.

That progression is something Texans fans have hoped to see entering Year 2 under Caley, and Teller believes the offense is already benefiting from the added continuity.

The Most Talented Team He's Ever Played On

Perhaps the strongest statement Teller made came when discussing Houston's overall roster.

After spending eight NFL seasons with Buffalo and Cleveland, he said the Texans are the most talented team he's ever been a part of.

What stood out wasn't simply the starting lineup. Teller repeatedly mentioned the depth throughout the organization, explaining that second- and third-string players continue pushing starters every day because nearly every position group is filled with legitimate NFL talent.

He believes that level of competition raises everyone's standard while also preparing the team to withstand injuries during a long season.

For a veteran who intentionally chose Houston during free agency because he wanted another opportunity to compete for a championship, that endorsement carries significant weight.

Mentoring the Next Generation Up Front

Teller also spoke highly of several members of Houston's offensive line room, particularly the younger players he'll help mentor this season.

He praised Aireontae Ersery's physical tools and eagerness to learn while describing first-round pick Keylan Rutledge as someone obsessed with football. Teller laughed while recalling Rutledge constantly taking notes during meetings and asking questions, saying it's obvious how badly the rookie wants to improve.

The veteran also discussed his own transition from right guard back to left guard, acknowledging there will be an adjustment period after starting more than 90 NFL games on the opposite side. Still, he believes practicing daily against Houston's defensive front will accelerate that process.

Just as importantly, Teller emphasized that the offensive line room is filled with players who genuinely want each other to succeed, creating healthy competition without sacrificing chemistry.

High Praise for Tommy Togiai

Having already interviewed Tommy Togiai earlier this week, it was fitting to hear just how much respect one of the NFL's premier guards has for Houston's ascending defensive tackle.

Teller, who previously crossed paths with Togiai in Cleveland, called him one of the strongest players he's ever seen while praising both his explosiveness and football intelligence. He explained that Togiai's ability to recognize screens, anticipate blocking schemes, and play with relentless effort makes him one of the toughest defensive linemen he faces in practice.

Teller also praised Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, Kayden McDonald, and the defense as a whole, explaining that competing against that unit every day will only make the offense better once the regular season begins.

It's exactly the type of iron-sharpens-iron environment DeMeco Ryans has tried to establish since taking over as head coach.

A Veteran Excited for What's Ahead

Beyond football, Teller spoke warmly about his family's transition to Houston, complimenting the city, its restaurants, and the fan base that has already embraced him before playing a regular-season snap.

More importantly, he sounded genuinely energized by the opportunity ahead.

After spending years searching for consistent championship contention, Teller believes he's joined an organization built to compete at the highest level.
