Jaylin Noel Expected to Miss Rest of Season; Texans Claim Emari Demercado

Houston Texans wide receiver Jaylin Noel wearing No. 13 reaches up to catch a football before a game.
Jaylin Noel is expected to miss the rest of the season with turf toe, according to Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle.

The Texans are losing a young receiver who had started to find his footing, while adding another option to a banged-up running back room. Houston announced Wednesday that it placed Jaylin Noel on Reserve/Injured and claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers.

Noel is expected to miss the rest of the season with the turf toe injury he suffered against New York, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday, citing a source. That is a much more significant outlook than the four-game minimum attached to an IR placement. The Texans’ transaction announcement confirms the roster move; the season-long expectation comes from Alexander’s reporting.

Noel’s absence interrupts a promising stretch

This is frustrating timing for Noel and the offense. The second-year receiver had just delivered a career-best yardage performance against Jacksonville in London, including a 50-yard gain that helped set up a score before halftime. In the Texans’ account of that performance, DeMeco Ryans highlighted the explosive plays Noel was producing as his opportunities grew.

If that expectation holds, Houston will need to replace Noel’s contributions for the remainder of the year. Our initial injury coverage focused on the turf toe diagnosis and walking boot after the Giants game. Alexander’s latest report changes the outlook from a question of short-term availability to the potential loss of the rest of Noel’s second season.

Dell’s return and Harrison’s arrival give Houston options

The encouraging part is that Tank Dell is back. After nearly two years away from game action, Dell immediately supplied a 43-yard reception against New York and a punt return that helped set up another touchdown. His return gives the Texans another way to create explosive plays just as Noel leaves the lineup, although it would be unfair to expect Dell to carry the entire burden immediately.

Marvin Harrison Jr. also continues to settle into Houston’s offense after arriving via trade, and Xavier Hutchinson should remain part of the mix. Hutchinson caught three passes against the Giants, while Harrison scored his first touchdown as a Texan. Alongside Nico Collins and the rest of the group, there are enough options to distribute Noel’s opportunities rather than force one player into every part of his role. The task is turning that depth into consistent production.

Who is Emari Demercado?

Houston lists Demercado at 5-foot-9 and 215 pounds. The 27-year-old is in his fourth NFL season and entered the league with Arizona as an undrafted free agent out of TCU in 2023. Before that, he helped the Horned Frogs reach the national championship game, rushing for 150 yards and a touchdown in their College Football Playoff semifinal win over Michigan.

NFL.com credits Demercado with 834 rushing yards and 50 catches for 324 yards across 42 career games. He offers experience working in a complementary role, but learning Houston’s terminology, protections and assignments will help determine how quickly he can contribute. A waiver claim gives him a roster opportunity; it does not establish a particular workload.

More insurance for an injured running back room

The need for another option is easy to understand. David Montgomery missed the Giants game with a groin injury, according to Houston’s official injury report. Jawhar Jordan is on the practice squad injured list with a quadriceps injury, leaving Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale to handle the available backfield work against New York.

Hopefully, adding Demercado is simply a way to strengthen the room while those two recover. The claim alone does not tell us that either Montgomery or Jordan has suffered a setback or will be out longer than previously expected. Houston has an open roster spot after Noel’s IR move and a clear reason to add insurance; the next health updates will tell us more about what the backfield could look like after the bye.

For now, the Texans have to absorb Noel’s absence with the receiving depth they recently rebuilt and give themselves more options at running back. Dell’s return, Harrison’s continued integration and Hutchinson’s involvement make the receiver situation more manageable. Getting healthier in the backfield remains something to watch.
