The Houston Texans are ensuring stability behind C.J. Stroud. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team has signed backup quarterback Davis Mills to a one-year, fully guaranteed $7 million contract extension, keeping him under contract through the 2026 season.

A Proven Backup

Mills, a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has carved out a reputation as one of the league’s more reliable backup quarterbacks. While his early years in Houston featured starting opportunities, he has since transitioned into a steady reserve option. Over four seasons, Mills has played in 38 games with 26 starts, throwing for 6,167 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions while completing 62.6% of his passes.

According to TexansCap, Mills’ new $7 million annual salary makes him the second-highest paid backup quarterback in the NFL, trailing only Marcus Mariota at $8 million.

His best year came in 2022, when he started all 15 games for the Texans, passing for 3,118 yards and 17 touchdowns but 15 interceptions. Though his starting record sits at 5-19-1, his experience is invaluable for a young quarterback room.

Strong Offseason Performance

This extension also reflects how well Mills has performed in recent months. By all accounts, he had a strong training camp and preseason, showing command of the offense and consistency as a passer. That performance, paired with his NFL experience, gives head coach DeMeco Ryans confidence in his depth at the position.

DeMeco Ryans’ Philosophy

Ryans has repeatedly emphasized the importance of depth at quarterback, not just relying on Stroud. His decision to keep rookie Graham Mertz on the 53-man roster further underlines this philosophy. As Ryans explained, the Texans need quarterbacks who can “still compete” even when they’re not the starter. Mills’ extension is a direct reflection of that belief.

Looking Ahead

With Mills now locked in through 2026, Houston maintains stability at a crucial position. Stroud is unquestionably the face of the franchise, but Mills provides the insurance every team needs — a quarterback who can step in with experience, poise, and knowledge of the system.

In a league where quarterback injuries can derail a season, the Texans’ investment in Mills signals how much they value preparedness at the most important position in football.
