Texans Shuffle Roster: Add Blake Ferguson, Waive Tre’ McKitty

The Houston Texans made another roster move today, signing long snapper Blake Ferguson and waiving tight end Tre’ McKitty, according to Jonathan M. Alexander.

McKitty’s stint in Houston turned out to be brief, perhaps cut short after the team acquired Harrison Bryant in the John Metchie III trade earlier this week. With Bryant stepping into the tight end rotation, McKitty’s role quickly became expendable.

Ferguson brings experience to the special teams unit. Drafted in the sixth round out of LSU in 2020, he served as the Miami Dolphins’ long snapper for four seasons before being released in May of 2025. His addition gives the Texans another proven option at the position.

The move also raises questions about where the Texans stand with rookie UDFA long snapper Austin Brinkman. Brinkman has been competing to replace longtime Texan Jon Weeks and has put together a solid camp, showing consistency in both practice and preseason action.

Bringing in Ferguson may not necessarily signal a lack of confidence in Brinkman, but rather give the team more depth and options as they continue evaluating the position heading into the season.

After writing this article, Aaron Wilson reported that Brinkman is dealing with a minor injury, which explains the signing.
