If you're a Texans fan, do yourself a favor and read Dan Pompei's outstanding new feature on Azeez Al-Shaair.

Many fans—including myself—already knew much of Al-Shaair's incredible journey. His family's struggles growing up, losing his home in a fire, overcoming poverty, fighting back from a torn ACL at Florida Atlantic and eventually making the NFL as an undrafted free agent have all been shared over the years.

Tyler Dunne also published an excellent in-depth feature earlier this year that explored much of Al-Shaair's upbringing, mentality and what makes him one of the fiercest competitors in football.

Even with all of that, Pompei's latest story still managed to reveal several details that were completely new to me and added even more appreciation for the player and leader Texans fans see every Sunday.

Rather than recap the entire feature, here were my biggest takeaways—and why both articles are well worth reading in full.

1. The Bike Became a Symbol of His NFL Journey

When Al-Shaair arrived in San Francisco as an undrafted rookie, he wasn't even sure he'd make the roster. Instead of buying a car with his modest signing bonus, he bought a bicycle from Walmart and rode it to and from the 49ers facility every day so he could arrive early and stay late.

According to Pompei, the bike eventually remained outside the team's facility long after Al-Shaair left, becoming a reminder to younger players that NFL careers aren't defined by where they begin. I also thought it was fascinating that the seat Al-Shaair once occupied in the 49ers' linebackers meeting room is still known as "Azeez's seat," with players who sit there reminded to uphold the standard he set.

For someone who has fought for everything he's earned, it's hard to imagine better symbols of his career than a bicycle parked outside the facility and a chair inside the meeting room that still bears his name years after he left.

2. I Had No Idea DeMeco Ryans Delivered the Toughest News of His Career

Texans fans know DeMeco Ryans and Al-Shaair share a special relationship.

What I didn't know was that Ryans was also the coach who had to tell Al-Shaair he wouldn't be active for Super Bowl LIV while they were together in San Francisco.

Imagine making the Super Bowl as an undrafted rookie, having family and friends travel to watch you play, only to learn on game day that you won't dress.

Pompei writes that Al-Shaair broke down after receiving the news.

Knowing that history makes their reunion in Houston feel even more meaningful. Ryans believed enough in Al-Shaair years later to make him the centerpiece of his defense, and Al-Shaair has rewarded that faith by becoming a Pro Bowler, team captain and one of the NFL's most respected linebackers.

3. The 49ers Almost Never Got to See the Player He Became

One of the stories that immediately came to mind while reading Pompei's feature was Tyler Dunne's excellent reporting from January.

Dunne detailed how Al-Shaair's relentless style nearly got him cut during training camp because he hit teammates with the same violence he played with on Sundays.

Kyle Shanahan eventually threatened to release him if he didn't stop. Then came one preseason tackle.

After seeing the play on film, Shanahan reportedly praised Al-Shaair in front of the entire team, and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh later told him that hit essentially earned him a roster spot.

When you combine that story with Pompei's account of the bike and the uncertainty surrounding his future, you realize just how close Al-Shaair came to never getting the opportunity Texans fans know him for today.

4. His Leadership Starts Long Before Kickoff

Texans fans see Al-Shaair directing traffic before the snap and setting the tone with his physical play every Sunday.

Pompei's story shows that leadership doesn't begin on game day.

He voluntarily attends meetings meant for rookie linebackers. He speaks to the Texans' rookie class about maximizing their careers. He stays after practice for extra conditioning.

Pompei even shared that teammates eventually started joining Al-Shaair during his post-practice walks wearing a weighted vest simply because they wanted to follow his example.

That lines up with what we've heard from teammates for years.

Henry To'oTo'o once described Al-Shaair as "the father of everybody" on the defense in Tyler Dunne's feature, while countless Texans players have referred to him as the emotional leader of the team.

Leadership isn't something Al-Shaair turns on during games—it's simply who he is.

5. Success Hasn't Changed His Priorities

One detail that really stood out to me was what Al-Shaair did after signing his lucrative contract extension.

Instead of making a flashy purchase, Pompei reported that many of the first large checks he wrote went to charities that were meaningful to him. He even described feeling guilty wearing expensive jewelry while visiting Jamaica on a humanitarian trip after seeing the poverty many families faced there.

According to the story, that jewelry has remained in a drawer ever since.

For someone who grew up with so little, it was another reminder that Al-Shaair's perspective hasn't changed simply because his circumstances have.

6. I Didn't Realize Just How Much Kansas City Had Shaped His Career

Texans fans already knew Al-Shaair's interception of Patrick Mahomes was a defining moment last season.

What I didn't fully appreciate until reading Pompei's feature was just how much history he had with the Chiefs.

Before sealing Houston's win with that game-clinching interception, Kansas City had been the site of some of the toughest moments of his career—from being told by DeMeco Ryans he would be inactive for Super Bowl LIV as a rookie to battling through injuries in a playoff loss years later.

Knowing that history makes the interception feel even more significant. It wasn't just another takeaway, it was the culmination of years of adversity against the same franchise.

7. There Was Still More to Learn

I've followed Azeez Al-Shaair's story fairly closely over the last few years, so I honestly wasn't expecting to come away learning much that I didn't already know.

Instead, I found myself appreciating his journey even more.

Pompei's feature adds meaningful new chapters to a story many Texans fans already knew, while Dunne's earlier profile remains one of the best looks into the mentality that drives Al-Shaair on and off the field.

If you haven't read either piece, I genuinely recommend both.

Together, they paint the clearest picture yet of why Al-Shaair has become so much more than the Texans' starting middle linebacker.

He's become the emotional heartbeat of one of the NFL's best defenses, and one of the most respected leaders inside the organization's walls.
