Nick Caserio said Tank Dell came through his first game back in a good spot, giving the Texans a positive starting point as they redistribute Jaylin Noel’s work on offense and special teams. In the Nov. 5 Texans Radio interview, Houston’s general manager also explained how the team used its bye to review personnel and practice, what it wants from six-lineman packages, and why the Chargers’ record tells only part of the story.

Dell handled game contact. Noel leaves two jobs to fill

Caserio said Dell’s return against the Giants gave the Texans a chance to see how his knee responded to real game contact after a long absence. The club uses game-speed data and practice workload to track players against their own baselines, alongside what players report about how they feel. Caserio’s immediate focus was Dell’s preparation for Sunday. He gave no snap or target projection.

Noel’s absence creates separate questions at receiver and on returns. Houston dressed six receivers against the Giants, and Caserio said the staff was working through how to deploy the five it now has. He singled out punt returns as a role to sort out and noted that Houston had already used several players on kickoffs. He expressed hope that Noel would be ready for the offseason program. Watch the receiver discussion at 4:12.

What Houston wanted from its recent roster moves

Caserio said waiver pickup Emari Demercado brings speed, experience in the passing game and some kickoff return work. Houston dressed two backs against the Giants, and Caserio said there was a good chance it would dress three against the Chargers. That would give the staff another option alongside Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale. Caserio also said Houston wanted to keep Naquan Jones after final cuts, and that the defensive tackle’s familiarity with the system helped make his return a fit.

He also explained the roster commitment that comes with signing a player from another club’s practice squad and why a player might choose to stay with his current team if he sees a path to game snaps. Watch the roster discussion at 6:55. See the Texans transaction tracker.

The bye review put tackling angles and jumbo usage under scrutiny

Houston’s offensive and defensive coaches studied each other’s film. Caserio said the exercise gave both staffs a chance to spot tendencies an opponent might see, and that he and DeMeco Ryans regularly compare notes after games. On tackling, he distinguished a missed one-on-one stop from a defender using his angle to force the runner toward help. His practice emphasis was getting bodies in position quickly enough for that pursuit to work at game speed.

Caserio also explained how he weighs a sixth offensive lineman. The extra blocker can help in the run game or improve pass protection, depending on who is available and how the defense responds. That leaves the package’s role open week to week. Watch the tackling and jumbo discussion at 17:38. Read our Under the Hood breakdown of Houston’s offense.

What Caserio sees in the Chargers

Caserio highlighted the Chargers’ physical defensive front and Tuli Tuipulotu’s ability to rush from the edge or move inside. On offense, he described Justin Herbert as a quarterback who can reach every part of the field and create with his athleticism while adjusting to Mike McDaniel’s system. Los Angeles has dealt with offensive line injuries and turnovers, but Houston still has to account for Herbert’s range and a front that can disrupt protections from several spots.

Houston visits the Chargers on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 3:05 p.m. CT. Watch Caserio’s Chargers scouting report at 11:43. See the matchup and injury reports on Gameday.
