Tank Dell Returns With a Big Play and Wants More for the Texans

Tank Dell’s return gave Houston a moment it had waited nearly two years to see: No. 1 catching a pass from C.J. Stroud, turning upfield and making a big play again. The Texans lost 27–21 to the Giants in overtime Sunday, but Dell’s comeback was a meaningful milestone of its own.

He finished with one reception for 43 yards, a two-yard rushing attempt and a 14-yard punt return. Those game totals tell only part of the story. This was his first game since December 21, 2024, when he suffered a serious knee injury while catching a touchdown in Kansas City.

The long road back to Sundays

The Texans confirmed that December that Dell had torn his ACL and dislocated his kneecap, requiring surgery. He missed the 2025 season before working his way back to game action this fall. Sunday marked 673 days between appearances, a much longer stretch than a typical offseason.

Before the Giants game, DeMeco Ryans emphasized gratitude over expectations. The coach said he wanted Dell to be himself and play within the offense, and described the receiver’s quickness creating difficult practice matchups. Getting back on the field was the first milestone; making a play with the ball was another.

A familiar connection with C.J. Stroud

In the Texans’ official postgame interview, Dell described his catch as a 19-yard deep curl he and Stroud had discussed. He tracked the ball through traffic, then turned into open grass. He also said taking contact had not worried him.

Dell expressed gratitude for returning, but his confidence remained familiar: “I’m a playmaker, man.” He said he expected more big plays. Houston Stressans shared his explanation of the catch and the excitement surrounding his return in the posts below.

Dell wants more than a comeback appearance

Asked about his snap count after the bye, Dell said he wanted the restriction removed: “I’m ready to roll.” He also expressed comfort returning punts and readiness for more opportunities, while offering support for injured teammate Jaylin Noel. Those comments describe what Dell wants, rather than a new workload announcement from the coaching staff.

For Houston, the return is now something tangible to build on. Dell is back in games, has reconnected with Stroud for an explosive gain and has made his preference clear: he wants to contribute more. The result Sunday was disappointing, but his return deserves room in the story too.
