Texans Postgame: Ryans and Stroud Address Penalties, Accountability and the Bye

DeMeco Ryans and C.J. Stroud put accountability at the center of their official postgame interviews after Sunday’s loss to the Giants. Both pointed to mistakes Houston must correct heading into the bye, while also discussing Tank Dell’s return and the need for more consistent offense.

Ryans: repeated penalties have to stop

Ryans called the penalties “ridiculous” and said Houston must correct recurring mistakes “or get different people in.” He did not announce a lineup change. Asked later about changing responsibilities or personnel during the bye, he said, “I’m not there yet.”

The coach also identified missed tackles despite defenders reaching the point of attack, coverage errors leaving receivers open and an inability to sustain drives on third down. He said he would evaluate the scheme, but emphasized blocking, tackling, protection and coverage fundamentals. Ryans placed responsibility on himself as well as the players and coaching staff.

Stroud wants hard conversations and corrections

Stroud described an offense that struggled to find rhythm. Discussing a late possession, he credited a Giants pressure package that included an unexpected defender dropping well downfield. He also described penalties as drive killers and said teammates need to help one another correct them.

His message entering the bye was to block out outside criticism while addressing problems internally. Stroud called for “hard conversations,” included his own performance in the accountability discussion and identified self-scouting as part of the work ahead. He expressed confidence in the team without dismissing the need for corrections.

Dell’s return and opportunities for the receivers

Ryans praised Dell’s rehabilitation and the energy surrounding his return, and said he expects Houston to increase his workload. He also said Jaylin Noel had turf toe and remained under evaluation; he did not provide a return timetable.

Stroud praised Dell’s preparation and wanted more ways to get him touches. He also highlighted Xavier Hutchinson’s contributions on offense and special teams, Marvin Harrison Jr.’s catch and Cade Stover’s work through contact. Creating more explosive plays and distributing opportunities were recurring themes in his answers. Stroud declined to frame this season through comparisons with last year.
