Caserio Says Stroud Talks Were Close; Ryans Keeps Texans Staff During Bye-Week Review

Nick Caserio and DeMeco Ryans addressed Houston’s 2-5 start in separate Monday media sessions on October 26. Caserio discussed C.J. Stroud’s contract negotiations and the trade market, while Ryans confirmed he is keeping his coaching staff as the Texans evaluate their problems during the bye.
Caserio: Stroud negotiations were close
Caserio said Houston and Stroud’s representatives were “pretty close” to an agreement before the season. He expressed confidence an extension would eventually be resolved, without providing a timetable or financial terms. He also praised Stroud’s play and offseason preparation.
Trade options remain open, without an overhaul
Asked whether Houston would buy or sell, Caserio chose neither label. He said the Texans have spoken with much of the league and will consider opportunities that make sense. He cautioned against knee-jerk decisions and said major personnel reconstruction generally comes in the offseason.
He described inconsistent offensive-line play, emphasizing finishing blocks, and said Houston must evaluate its best five. Caserio defended the Marvin Harrison Jr. acquisition as an opportunity to add talent with value beyond this season. He also discussed ownership’s support, rookies developing at different rates and the personal significance of Tank Dell’s return.

Ryans retains his staff and puts the focus on coaching
Ryans answered yes when asked whether he would stay with his current staff. Asked about repercussions for recurring mistakes, he said, “We keep coaching. I don’t run from coaching.” He put responsibility on himself to make practice emphasis translate to games.
His specifics included wrapping up tackles, attacking runners rather than waiting and avoiding holds. Ryans acknowledged the Giants were more physical. He remained confident in Houston’s schemes while saying he would review adjustments, including how to limit explosive plays.
Third downs, receiver usage and injury updates
Ryans linked limited receiver opportunities to stalled drives. He said third-down pressure caused problems and identified protection changes and hot answers as areas requiring shared recognition. Better first and second downs, he said, would create more manageable situations.
He said Houston would review how to use its receivers and praised Dell’s preparation. Ryans provided no new availability update on David Montgomery or Jalen Pitre. Jaylin Noel’s turf toe remained under evaluation for severity, without a timetable.
