The Houston Texans are bringing back a familiar piece of their defense.

According to Aaron Wilson, the Texans have agreed to terms with linebacker E.J.

Speed on a two-year contract worth up to $13 million with $7.5 million guaranteed.

Contract details later shared by Over The Cap and Troy Chapman indicate the base structure is roughly two years $10 million with incentives that could push it to $13 million, putting Speed’s APY around $5 million.

For the Texans, this represents a reasonable deal for a player who proved far more valuable than many expected last season.

From Special Teamer to Defensive Contributor

When the Texans originally signed Speed in free agency last year, many assumed he would primarily be a special teams contributor.

Instead, Speed quickly carved out a meaningful role in DeMeco Ryans’ defense.

He played significant defensive snaps and started multiple games at WILL linebacker, lining up opposite Azeez Al-Shaair. He rotated with Henry To'oTo'o and played in true 4-3 packages.

At worst, Speed provides:

  • Reliable rotational depth at linebacker

  • A high-end special teams contributor

  • A defender already comfortable in the Texans’ defensive system

At best, he continues the development he showed last season and remains a player the coaching staff trusts when called upon defensively.

Personally, I was very high on Speed when the Texans first signed him, and last season largely validated that belief. What many thought would be a special teams-only addition turned into a player who logged real defensive snaps and helped stabilize the linebacker rotation.

A Good Fit in DeMeco Ryans’ Defense

One of the biggest reasons this deal makes sense is continuity.

Speed already understands the defensive system run by head coach DeMeco Ryans and the responsibilities of the WILL linebacker role within it.

Ryans has consistently emphasized speed, range, and physicality at the second level, and Speed fits that profile well.

Keeping players who already know the scheme allows the Texans to maintain defensive cohesion while continuing to build depth around their core starters.

What Does This Mean for Henry To'oTo'o?

One natural question that arises from this signing is what it means for To’oTo’o.

The former fifth-round pick is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and the Texans will eventually need to decide how they want to handle that situation.

Possible paths include:

  • An extension if the team believes he is part of the long-term plan

  • Standing pat and letting him play out the final year of his rookie deal

  • Exploring trade options if another team shows interest

At the moment, the latter seems unlikely.

To’oTo’o’s cap savings would be minimal if moved, and he has become a trusted piece of the linebacker room under Ryans. For now, this move appears more about depth and continuity than replacing anyone currently on the roster.

Impact on the Draft

The signing also slightly changes how the Texans may approach the linebacker position in the upcoming NFL Draft.

With Al-Shaair, Speed, and To’oTo’o already in place, Houston does not enter the draft with an urgent need at linebacker.

That said, general manager Nick Caserio has consistently leaned toward best player available rather than drafting strictly for need.

If a linebacker prospect offers strong value, particularly on Day 3, the Texans could still add a developmental player to the room.

Final Thoughts

This is the type of move that may not generate massive headlines but quietly strengthens the roster.

Speed proved last season that he can be more than just a special teams contributor.

Bringing him back on a reasonable deal ensures the Texans retain a player who can start when needed, rotate defensively, and continue to be a core special teams piece.

For a defense built on depth, versatility, and speed, this re-signing checks all the right boxes.

And personally, I’m ecstatic the Texans were able to get this deal done.
