The Houston Texans are continuing to add depth to their defensive front.

According to Aaron Wilson, the Texans are signing defensive end Dominique Robinson to a one-year deal worth up to $4 million.

Robinson most recently spent time with the Chicago Bears after being selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

A Developmental Edge with Traits

Robinson entered the league as one of the more intriguing developmental prospects in his draft class.

A former quarterback and wide receiver at Miami RedHawks, Robinson converted to defensive end late in his college career. Because of that transition, he has always been viewed as a traits-based prospect with upside rather than a finished product.

At roughly 6-5 and 275 pounds, Robinson brings length and athleticism that fits the type of defensive linemen Houston has targeted under head coach DeMeco Ryans.

Production in Chicago

Across four seasons with the Bears, Robinson appeared in 46 games with 8 starts, recording:

  • 3.5 sacks

  • 68 total tackles

  • 6 tackles for loss

  • 7 quarterback hits

His most productive season came as a rookie in 2022, when he logged 1.5 sacks and 30 tackles while starting seven games.

While the raw production never fully took off in Chicago, Robinson’s physical tools and flashes as a pass rusher have kept teams interested in his upside.

Depth Addition to the Texans Defensive Front

Houston’s defensive line rotation relies heavily on waves of pass rushers, and adding Robinson provides another athletic edge defender who can develop within the system.

The Texans already feature one of the league’s premier young pass rushers in Will Anderson Jr., along with veteran presence from Danielle Hunter.

Robinson projects as a depth piece and developmental rotational edge, someone who can compete for snaps in the defensive line rotation and contribute on special teams.

What This Could Mean for the Edge Rotation

One question this signing raises is whether it impacts the possibility of the Texans bringing back Derek Barnett.

Barnett played an important role in Houston’s defensive line rotation last season, providing experienced depth behind the primary edge rushers and contributing situational pressure packages.

My early read is that this move likely does not eliminate the possibility of Barnett returning.

Instead, Robinson may simply fill the role that Darrell Taylor occupied in the Texans’ rotation last season — essentially serving as the fourth or fifth edge defender with developmental upside.

Houston has shown a clear preference under DeMeco Ryans for maintaining a deep pass-rush rotation, allowing the defensive line to stay fresh and continue generating pressure throughout games.

Because of that philosophy, the Texans could still choose to bring back Barnett or add another more established edge rusher to round out the room.

If that happens, Robinson would likely compete for rotational snaps while continuing to develop his pass-rush skills within the system.

A Low-Risk Bet on Upside

A one-year deal worth up to $4 million signals a classic low-risk, upside signing.

If Robinson can tap into the physical traits that made him a draft pick in 2022, Houston could add another athletic pass rusher to a defensive front that already thrives on pressure.

At worst, the move strengthens the depth and competition along the defensive line heading into training camp.
