CJ Stroud looks downfield to pass versus the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7
Zach Tarrant/Houston Texans

After winning a game that felt like it could have been for the AFC South Championship, the challenge isn’t finding a silver lining but identifying the most significant positives from Sunday’s victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Here are the top reasons I’m optimistic about the 2024 Houston Texans following Week 8.

Texans Secondary

The Houston Texans' secondary delivered a masterclass in defensive back play against Anthony Richardson on Sunday, limiting him to a dismal 31.3% completion rate. Richardson’s low point came when he was just 2 of 15 on passing attempts, capped by a timely interception by Jalen Pitre just before the half. While some might argue that this is typical of Richardson’s performance, it’s worth noting that the Texans also recently held Josh Allen to a mere 9 completions out of 30 attempts. This highlights that the Texans’ secondary is not only effective against young, developing quarterbacks but also seasoned veterans, showcasing their versatility and effectiveness in shutting down opposing passing games.

I’d like to acknowledge the standout performances of a few players on Sunday. Eric Murray was exceptional, with several deflections that disrupted passing plays, showing his ability to impact the game. Additionally, Kamari Lassiter has made a substantial impact this season; I believe he might be the best tackler in our secondary, crucially bolstering our defense.

Denico Autry

Denico Autry was one of the most highly touted players the Texans signed during the offseason. He received praise from Nick Caserio and DeMeco Ryans even before taking a snap for the Texans. However, the excitement was tempered when Autry failed a drug test for PEDs during the preseason, derailing the hype before it could truly begin. This violation forced him to miss the first six games of the regular season. Autry returned in a limited role last week, but it was clear he was just beginning to show what he could bring to the defensive line.

On Sunday, his impact was unmistakable. Although he didn’t heavily populate the stat sheet, his presence was felt throughout the game as he consistently applied pressure and was disruptive, living up to initial expectations. His influence was most evident on the final play of a crucial drive, where, lined up with Hunter and Anderson in a 3 vs. 5 scenario, Autry pressured Anthony Richardson, leading to a sack, forced fumble, recovery, and ultimately securing victory for the Texans. I expect Autry to have an even greater impact moving forward.

Texans Wide Receiver Depth

When Stefon Diggs was injured, there was widespread concern in the Texans community. Entering the season, this team was regarded as having one of the league’s best receiving corps. Despite a slow start, I stand by this assessment. Nico Collins is set to return next week, Tank Dell made a significant impact in Sunday’s game, and Robert Woods contributed with several key plays.

The big question marks are Xavier Hutchinson and John Metchie. We’ll get more answers on Thursday, but I’m optimistic. Some of the team’s best performances last year occurred even when not all receivers were available. Both Metchie and Hutchinson stepped up in crucial moments on Sunday, and I’m eager to see what they can achieve.

Left Guard Movement

Given the pass-blocking struggles in Sunday’s game, it might seem reasonable to question optimism about the left guard (LG) position. However, the coaching staff’s decision to insert Jarrett Patterson at LG offers a glimmer of hope. In the one drive Patterson played, the Texans managed an effective offensive drive, culminating in a touchdown. Kenyon Green, a former first-round pick, had a promising start in Week 1 but has struggled since, especially evident on Sunday. With Patterson now in concussion protocol, I’m hopeful for a change, potentially seeing Kendrick Green at LG or moving Tytus Howard to LG with Blake Fisher stepping up at right tackle. The offensive line has been a persistent issue this season, but addressing it could unlock the offense’s full potential. If adjustments like these can stabilize the line, the Texans’ offensive output possibilities become vast.

Linebacker Whisperer

A quick shout-out to DeMeco Ryans for his outstanding work in developing linebackers and enhancing their performance. Despite missing our top three linebackers, this position group continues to perform admirably. Devin White, a recent addition, played 50% of the defensive snaps and did so effectively. Help is on the way, with a strong chance Henry To'oto'o returns this week. Azeez Al-Shaair, who was on track for an impressive season, is also expected back at some point this year, and Christian Harris remains on IR with hopes for a playoff return. What was once considered a position of need has now become a strength for the Texans. Depth players like Devin White, Jake Hansen, and Neville Hewitt have stepped up admirably, and I eagerly anticipate seeing this linebacker corps at full strength.

That concludes my Week 8 silver lining breakdown. With a quick turnaround for the game against the Jets on Thursday night, expect another breakdown shortly afterward. Please feel free to provide feedback, as I'm new to this, and any constructive criticism would be appreciated. Stay optimistic, Texans fans!
