The Houston Texans have released wide receiver Diontae Johnson on January 14, 2025, after a brief and tumultuous tenure with the team. Johnson's recent career has been marked by frequent team changes and reported dissatisfaction with his roles.

Johnson began the 2024 season with the Carolina Panthers after being traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers in the offseason, recording 30 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns over seven games. However, visible frustrations and poor chemistry with quarterback Bryce Young led to his trade to the Baltimore Ravens in October.

His stint with the Ravens was similarly troubled. Johnson managed just one catch for six yards in four games and was suspended for refusing to enter a Week 13 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. This incident culminated in his release from Baltimore in December.

The Texans claimed Johnson off waivers on December 23, 2024, seeking to bolster their receiving corps after losing Tank Dell to a season-ending injury. Johnson, known for his elite route-running and playing the same "Z" position as Dell, seemed a fitting replacement.

Due to the quick turnaround, Johnson did not play in the Christmas Day game against the Ravens. He made his Texans debut in Week 18 against the Tennessee Titans, playing 20 snaps and recording two catches for 12 yards on four targets. In the Wild Card playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers, he played 16 snaps, catching one pass for 12 yards on a single target. Despite his ability to get open, the chemistry with quarterback C.J. Stroud was lacking.

Reports indicate that after the playoff victory over the Chargers, Johnson appeared dejected in the locker room while teammates celebrated. Attempts by key players to console him were unsuccessful. This behavior likely contributed to the Texans' decision to release him.

Head coach DeMeco Ryans had previously expressed optimism about Johnson's fresh start with the Texans, similar to past successful integrations like that of Stefon Diggs. However, prioritizing team cohesion over individual discontent, Ryans and the organization chose to part ways with Johnson.

This development poses a potential distraction as the Texans prepare for their upcoming playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs. However, the team's swift action suggests a commitment to maintaining focus and unity moving forward.
