The Houston Texans have continued their recent wave of salary cap maneuvering by restructuring the contract of safety Jalen Pitre, creating additional financial flexibility as the team prepares for free agency.

While the full details of the restructure have not yet been officially released, the move is expected to create approximately $5.19 million in salary cap savings for the 2026 season. The savings come from converting a portion of Pitre’s base salary into signing bonus, which allows the Texans to spread that cap hit over multiple years.

Pitre previously signed a three-year, $39 million contract extension with Houston that keeps him under contract through the 2028 season. The deal included roughly $29 million guaranteed, solidifying him as a key piece of DeMeco Ryans’ defense moving forward.

Texans Cap Space Update

According to TexansCap’s projections following the move:

  • Projected cap space: ~ $28.1 million

  • Effective cap space (including draft pool hold): ~ $23.7 million

Those numbers provide the Texans additional room to maneuver as they evaluate potential free-agent signings, extensions, or additional restructures this offseason.

Another Example of Caserio’s Cap Strategy

This move is another example of general manager Nick Caserio strategically using restructures to maintain roster flexibility while keeping core players in place. Rather than cutting contributors or pushing toward short-term fixes, the Texans have prioritized restructuring deals for players who are expected to remain part of the long-term foundation.

Pitre certainly fits that description. Since being drafted in the second round out of Baylor in 2022, he has become one of the defense’s most active playmakers, thriving in a versatile role that often places him around the line of scrimmage in DeMeco Ryans’ system.

More Cap Moves Are Possible

Pitre’s restructure likely won’t be the last financial move Houston makes this offseason.

Several contracts on the roster could potentially be adjusted to create additional room depending on how aggressive the Texans want to be in free agency.
